Audio/Visual
The A/V team is a subset of New Life’s Worship Team. We support a smooth running worship service by managing the electronic equipment. Our team has two major responsibilities: sound and slides.
Sound
Our sound personnel run the mixer board, arrange the microphones, and setup any other equipment for connecting the musicians into our sound system.
I know the mixer board looks like the controls of an alien spaceship. It’s really not so bad. The mixer has 32 channels. The controls for all 32 are identical. Learn number 1, and you learned 2 through 32. With a little practice, the board isn’t so intimidating.
We want two full time sound people and one backup. The two full time people trade off on a regular schedule. Even with two people, we have Sundays when both can’t be there. Our backup takes over in these situations.
The sound person works both services – 8:30 and 11:00. This helps the Worship Team tremendously. Even better – practice begins at 7:30am. The sound person – like the rest of the Worship team – works from 7:30 to about 12:30.
The Short Version
- Arrive by 7:30am for practice.
- Work both services.
- Two regular sound people plus a backup.
So what is the actual time commitment? I can’t say. We do not have a regular schedule yet. I imagine something like 2 weeks on, 2 weeks off or every other month. Join the team and you have a say in how it unfolds.
Slides
The slide person moves the chorus’ along during service. Before service, they verify and tweak the slide show. The job requires a basic knowledge of Microsoft PowerPoint.
The morning begins at 7:45. A quick run through verifies that the slides match the order of worship, each slide in a chorus has the same background, and we have blanks positioned during pauses or when someone speaks.
Then you insert the pastor’s sermon slides into PowerPoint. Check the timings on his bullet points. And the slide show is ready.
The service flows like a script. You move from slide to slide. Keep an eye out for last minute changes by the song leader. Fortunately, they’re rare.
The Short Version
- Arrive by 7:45am for setup.
- Fix formatting issues.
- Insert the pastor’s sermon slides.
- Make last minute changes.
